This AP is on a lovely gold shimmer paper from GF Smith and is a unique piece.
This vintage image brings up John Berger’s theory around the mirror and how artists have used a mirror in a woman’s hand as symbol of vanity, when it’s actually the artist, or us the viewer who are looking at her.
In this photograph, the woman looks assured and in control of her gaze; that is why I chose to work with it. She’s dressing, and checking in. ‘Looking Good’is subjective so own the gaze, rather than present to please or to conform to a standard.
Berger’s Ways of Seeing is still relevant. We’ve moved on since the 1970s, but not so much. His writing considers centuries of representation that is relatable today…
